Obituary of John Hans Hirnikl

John Hirnikl, 88, passed away Monday, March 11, 2019 at the Greenview Inn. John was born January 20, 1931 to Joseph and Maria (Geiser) Hirnikl in Slatinik, Croatia and came to the United States and Akron in 1952 with Three Dollars in his pocket and a cuckoo clock. He began working in the parts department of City Chevrolet until he found a mechanics garage for sale and ran the W & M Motor Service for thirty years. After he retired, he became more involved in the Sons of Herman where he was a member, eventually becoming president, manager of the club and the club chef. Not one to sit at home, he also enjoyed several years managing the gas station for BJ Wholesale Club in North Akron. John was a member of the former Christ the King Catholic Church and currently a member of Blessed Trinity Catholic Church. He was also a member of the German Family Society and was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. John is survived by his children Rev. Mr. John (Tracy) Hirnikl and Lisa (Brian) Geer; grandchildren Nate, Matt and Josh Geer and Ryan and Rachel Hirnikl; siblings Pete (Maria) Hirnikl and Mary Ganz. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister and brothers-in-law Kathy and Andy Pum and Frank Ganz. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 14, 2019 from 5 to 7 pm at the Anthony Funeral Home of Green, 4178 Massillon Rd. (corner of Massillon and Steese Roads in Green, entrance off Steese Rd.). Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, March 15, 2019 at 10:00am at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, 300 E.
