Obituary of David John Dougherty

David (Dave) John Dougherty, 76, of Akron, Ohio passed away November 5, 2018.
He was born in Canton, Ohio on March 22, 1942 to John and Marie Dougherty. He graduated from Canton Central Catholic High School as the valedictorian of his class. He received his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from Case Western Reserve, and his Master's from The University of Akron. He married Donna Jean Dougherty on August 29, 1964.
Dave was a respected engineer at Bridgestone/Firestone for 36 years, with several patents to his name. Dave also started a successful hobby mail-order business building a line of over 600 scale model warships, selling the ships globally for over 45 years. He was a lifelong, active member of the Roman Catholic Church. He was known for his love of playing cards, hiking with his children and grandchildren, building model railroads, wine making, dancing, and rescuing turtles.
Dave is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Donna; seven children, Michael (Adrienne) Dougherty, Christine (Dan) Walker, Terry Misenhelter, Suzanne (Tim) Hughes, Mary (Matt) Kertesz, Ruth (Michael) Kyle, Angela (John) Garrett; brothers Dan and John, and sister Rose. He also took great joy in his twenty grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Dave is preceded in death by his daughter Anne Dougherty, his parents, his brothers Mike and Pat, and his sister Donna.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Nov. 8, from 4-8 pm, at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St. in Akron. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Nov. 9, at 10 am at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1580 Brown St. in Akron. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
