Joan Costigan

Obituary of Joan Mary Costigan

-CUYAHOGA FALLS Born in Akron Ohio on August 18, 1928 Joan Mary (Berg) Costigan died peacefully on January 11 after a long illness. She was surrounded by her loving family. Joan grew up in North Hill and graduated from North High School. She spent all of her adult life in Cuyahoga Falls where she and husband Jack made a happy home for themselves and their six daughters. Joan was a dedicated member of St. Joseph Parish and volunteered countless hours with the Altar Rosary Society and Home and School League. She was a member of the Christ Child Society where she carefully sewed and assembled layettes for area needy mothers and their babies. When Jack retired, they spent many wonderful years together volunteering with the Earth Care program helping the clients at Weaver School and Workshop learn about plants and gardening. A dedicated wife for nearly 65 years, Joan was crazy about Jack until the day she died. She instilled in her daughters the importance of a good education, good grammar and a classy sense of style. She never left the house without her lipstick and a spritz of Aromatics perfume and always loved a cup of fresh, hot coffee. Before her illness, Joan baked every day. She enjoyed gardening, reading, watching The Tribe, napping and she had a weakness for candy. Joan lived her life with grace and humility in both good times and bad. She was a private woman who worked hard, seldom complained and was always there when we needed her. Joan had an unbreakable faith in God and often smiled when she recalled what a wonderful, happy life she had. Anyone who knew her will always remember her extraordinary kindness, patience and great sense of humor. Joan is survived by her loving husband Jack, her adoring daughters Molly, Julie (Mark) Roberts, Barbara (Kevin) Sohner, and Peggy (Don) Reagan. In addition, she leaves behind cherished grandchildren Megan Roberts Esterling (spouse, Carter), Emily Roberts, John Sohner (spouse Jessica), and Donnie Reagan, great- grandchildren Genevieve Esterling and Jack Sohner, many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughters Joanie and Rosie Costigan, her sisters Betty Haidnick and Lois Berg, her parents Anna and Don Berg. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to everyone at National Church Residence who tenderly cared for Joan and our family during the past seven years. They created for all of us a home away from home so we could relax and enjoy our time with her. Their support and friendship to Jack during his daily visits and goodbye kisses with Joan will always be treasured. We cannot forget to thank the neighbors, relatives and friends who through the years were so willing to help our parents with rides, meals and companionship. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 1761 Second St, Cuyahoga Falls, OH, on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 10 a.m., with a reception immediately to follow at the church. Burial will be private. Joan always said that flowers were for the living so to honor her, please consider a memorial contribution to the Falls Cancer Club P.O. Box 3244 Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44223.
