Gene taught me to not take hugs for granted. He taught me to show gratitude and love to those who need it most. He would appear, right on time, when I needed a hug, and often when I didn't realize I needed one until after he would give me one and I would walk away wiping the tears in my eyes because someone took the time to care. He was a true God-send. Gene taught me to stop and take an extra second for a hug, even when I was already running late. It was worth it every time. I didn't know that my last hug with him was going to be our last on earth. As I enter the lobby or turn corners in the hospital halls, my mind and heart still wish that the tall guy with his arms outstretched would be right there. He was like a grandfather to me. I was probably the toughest one to get a hug out of for a while and I was probably the one who needed them most. I'm so thankful that he graciously gave freely and humbly reflected His Savior's light to all who knew him. He taught me to change and to serve others well. It is I who thank YOU, Gene!!

Gene was my first boss in the real world. I worked with Gene for about five years and in that time he taught me a lot always treating me fairly. After Gene retired I would see him at General Hospital, strange but it seemed like everytime I went to the hospital I would see Gene. The last time was in October when my daughter had her baby.He was looking well and we had a nice chat. I am really sorry he has passed but I am sure he is enjoying a well deserved after life.

Gene led all of us at Akron General with his love. So caring to our patients, so connected to his colleagues in the Volunteer Corps and throughout the system! I'll miss his hugs and kind encouragement -- and how, past 80, he could still rock a tux! Gene, we'll all look for you in heaven's music room! Save me a seat by you, dear friend!

My deepest sympathies to Gene's family. We are all saddened by the news.
Gene, always smiling and joking, making us all, sick and well, feel better. He always went out of his way to salute me or do the "knuckles" hello. He's been away from us for only a few days, but his absence is already noticed--- and although he's moved on to a better place, I'll still be looking for him in all his old familiar places in Akron General.
May God bless him on his journey,
Ben Alvarez, MD

Sympathy to the Family
Gene was always the first face to greet at the Blood Drive so pleasant after working a night shift. I would see Gene in the Hall's transport patient in wheelchair to front doors standing waiting for their ride. AGMC lost a wonderful person but Heaven gained an ANGEL. So glad I had the chance to know Gene.

I worked with Gene for a few years at AGMC and he was so kind, sweet and a joy to work with. There are few kinder souls that I've ever known and I know he reached many while volunteering there. I've thought of him often since I left and always made sure to say hi when I saw him when visiting. My thoughts go out to his family and friends at this time, he will be truly missed.
