Obituary of Dana 'Sam' Sample
Dana J. Sample, 83, passed away with the compassionate & loving care of VNS Hospice & family on April 30 after a long courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Wadsworth, OH on January 21, 1924 and was a lifetime resident of Akron and Barberton. Sam served his country as a member of the marines during WWII. He worked as an engineer for B&O Railroad (CSX), retiring in 1986 with 30 years of service. Sam was a 32nd Degree Mason and a former member of The Oriental Band of the Shrine, as well as the Eagles Nest #555.
Dana was preceded in death by his parents Ruby and Carl Sample & stepson Thomas J. Collins. He is survived by his wife of 39 years Virginia of Barberton; stepchildren Robert (Lisa) Blachaniec of Akron, Victoria Paster of Akron, and Susan Greenawald of Orange, TX; stepgrandchildren Leah and Kiley Blachaniec of Akron & Virginia, Thomas, and Chad Anthony of Orange, TX; halfbrothers Robert (Carol) Sample of Wooster & John (Donna) Sample of Cincinnati; sister-in-law Mary Jane Olesky of Barberton as well as many nieces & nephews.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6-8 pm at The Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Funeral Home 95 W. Waterloo Rd. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 am at the funeral home, where the family will again receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of VNS 3358 Ridgewood Rd. Akron, OH 44333.
