Obituary of Herb Wells
Herb Wells, 84, passed away peacefully February 1, 2007 following 10 years of declining health.
He was born and raised in Cambridge, Ohio and attended OSU where he was known as "Slip" on the football team for his ability to escape tackles. He enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corp and proudly served during WWII. Following his work in factories in the Canton area, he enrolled at Akron University and received his Bachelor's degree in Physical Education. While teaching P.E. in Akron and Cuyahoga Falls, he pursued his Master's and Educational Specialist degrees at Kent State. He was eventually named Assistant Principal of Lincoln Elementary and Principal of Grant and Price Elementaries in Cuyahoga Falls.
After his retirement from Price, he and his wife moved to Pinellas County Florida, which they enjoyed for 25 years. They returned to Ohio in 1997 due to their mutually declining health.
Herbert will be remembered for his sense of humor, his generosity, and the care and concern that he had for children during his years of public education. Herb was an avid fisherman and golfer. He also enjoyed traveling and cooking.
Herb was preceded in death by his wife Doris, his sisters Marie and Anna and brother Harold. He is survived by daughter Diane of Canton, nieces Brenda Wallace of Canton, and Janet Cabral of Los Angeles, nephew Rick Williams of Croton-on-Hudson, NY and many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. In addition, close family friends Evelyn Neale and her daughter Linda Sackett survive.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Herb's life will be held Wednesday, at 12:00 PM, at the McGowan-Reid and Santos Funeral Home. (at 3rd St, just north of Portage Trail in the Falls). The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. The family requests that memorial be made in his name to Carroll Health Care Center, Carrollton, Ohio 44615, for the loving care and comfort he and Doris received there in their last years.
