Obituary of Alexandra Shkolnik

Dr. Alexandra Shkolnik (nee Oliynyk), passed away Monday, December 8, 2014 in Akron, Ohio. She was 91 years old. Alexandra was born in 1923 in Ternopil, Ukraine. She studied medicine at the University of Munich, graduating in 1949. She immigrated with her family to the United States in 1950. She lived in Cleveland for several years, and then moved to Akron, where she lived for over 50 years. She practiced radiology from 1960 to 1990, the last 27 years at Barberton Citizens' Hospital. Her particular interest was the study, screening, and diagnosis of breast cancer. Alexandra was a devoted Catholic Christian, and had a great love for her Ukrainian heritage and culture. She was very generous and often helped many family members and friends. She enjoyed traveling and was blessed to have visited six continents, including Antarctica. Her other well-known loves included coffee, chocolate, nuts, and cream cheese! Alexandra was preceded in death by parents Olexa and Natalia Oliynyk, nephew Alexander Oliynyk, and brother-in-law Michael Mykytiuk. Alexandra is survived by daughter and son-in-law Marta and Ihor Tarko, son and daughter-in-law Andrew and Cindy Shkolnik, grandsons Konstantin and Alexander Tarko, sister Oksana Mykytiuk, brother and sister-in-law Yuriy and Ola Oliynyk, niece Natalia-Chrystyna Howard and husband Michael, nephew Stefan Mykytiuk, and other family in Canada and Ukraine. The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors of Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service for their care and support. Friends may call at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St., Akron, on Friday, December 12, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, with Panakhyda service at 7:00 pm. Funeral Liturgy will be at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1866 Brown St., Akron, on Saturday, December 13, at 10:00 am. Interment to follow at St. Andrew Cemetery, 7700 Hoertz Rd., Parma. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation, 2247 W.
