Obituary of Louis Codian
Louis Codian, 94, passed away Saturday, November 22, 2014.
Lou was born January 14, 1920 to Joseph and Rafaela (Di Maro) Codian in Akron and had been an area resident his entire life. He was a proud veteran of the Army during WWII. He fought valiantly in the battle of Huertgen Forest, where he was wounded and eventually captured by German forces. He survived several months of captivity until the war ended. He was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism or meritorious service in a combat zone, a Purple Heart and the POW Medal.
Lou returned to the United States and married his loving and devoted wife Marguerite (Marge) Parish. He was employed by Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. for 35 years. While living in Akron, Lou was a member of St. Paul's Church for 43 years. For the last decade, Lou was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Massillon.
He was a member of Northeast Ohio Ex-Prisoners of War, VFW Post 3383 and the Kenmore Italian Civic Club. He donated his time after retirement to the Red Cross as a driver and was proud of his numerous blood donations that he continued until the age of 83. He was a faithful and devoted volunteer at St. Joseph Soup Kitchen and Ronald McDonald House. He was proud of having the opportunity to climb the Statue of Liberty on two occasions. He loved taking his wife to polka dances throughout NE Ohio and listening on Saturday mornings to them on the radio.
Lou is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marge; Children Diane (Harry) Howerbush, Janet Greer, Cynthia Parker and Louis J. (Claudia) Codian; brother Mike Codian, 5 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and was preceded in death by his loving seven sisters and grandson Elliot Greer.
The family is grateful to Crossroads Hospice of Green for their assistance, care and compassion. They truly made this time in his life comfortable for him and his family. They cannot be thanked enough for all they provided in his time of need. The family will receive friends on Friday the 28th of Nov. from 4 to 8 pm at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St., Akron OH 44301. Funeral services will begin Saturday 10:30 am at the funeral home and will be followed by a funeral Mass of Christian Burial at St. Paul Catholic Church 1580 Brown St., Akron OH 44301. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, your kind donations may be made to St. Joseph Soup Kitchen, 322 3rd St SE, Massillon, OH 44646.
