Obituary of Mildred A. Duhon

Duhon, Mildred (Filipovic) Amelia Mildred (Filipovic) Duhon of Akron passed away peacefully on Sat., Oct. 18, 2014, at the age of 87. Millie was born on Feb. 5, 1927, on her grandfather's farm in Bedford, Ohio, and at a young age moved to Akron where she lived for the remainder of her life. Baptized at St. Lawrence Church in Cleveland, she was later a parishioner at Christ the King, St. Paul, and Annunciation Catholic churches in Akron. On Oct. 9, 1948, she married Andrew Michael Duhon, her husband of 49 years, and they lovingly raised a daughter and five sons. Together they owned and operated Milandy's Cafe on Lover's Lane in Akron for 34 years, until they sold the business in 1989. For several years she also ran Three Sisters Bridal Shop with her sisters Teresa (Albert) Koneck and Marie (Richard) Wooley who preceded her in death. Millie was a proud member of the Slovenian and Croatian communities, and also supported the activities of her children and community in numerous leadership roles, including as an officer at the Akron Mothers of the Deaf, president of the St. Paul's Booster Club, and president of the Mothers Club and the Booster Club at Archbishop Hoban High School where she also chaired several of the school's scholarship balls. Later in life she was proud to be the inaugural member of the Broads on Broad Street, an informal residents' group at Annunciation Terrace Apartments in Akron. She was also an avid and lifelong crafter and fan of the Cleveland Indians. She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather Frances (Zotlar) and Daniel Genda, father Michael Filipovic, and brothers Paul (Rosemary) Genda, William (Irene) Genda, and Thomas Genda. She is survived by daughter Denise (John Joseph) Gless of Akron, sons Andrew, Jr. (Sherry) of Ocean View (Bethany Beach), Del., Dennis (Anita) of Wadsworth, Thomas (Cyndee) of Cuyahoga Falls, Patrick of Lincoln, R.I., and Mark (Vicki) of Chicago, Ill., sisters-in-law Mary Ann (Pappas) Duhon of Akron and Donna (Gordon) Genda of Appleton, Wis., 16 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and dozens of nieces and nephews. The family will receive relatives and friend at Anthony Funeral Home, Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St., on Tuesday, October 21from 4 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 22 at St. Paul Church, 1580 Brown St. at 10 a.m., with Fr. Matthew Pfeiffer officiating, interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
