Obituary of Charles Howard Bittner
Charles "Chick" Bittner was reunited with his loving wife, Marie, on Monday, July 10, 2017. He was 101.
Born in Akron, Ohio on January 20, 1916, Chick will be remembered for his heart, his smarts, his wit and the way he was always willing to help a friend.
Chick and Marie (Turner) shared 75 loving years of marriage, nearly all of them in the same home they built after he returned home from World War II.
His time in the United States Navy had a profound impact on his life. Chick proudly served as Chief Petty Officer in the Pacific Theatre. Back in Akron, Chick went on to work as a purchasing agent at Portage Machine for more than 60 years.
Marie's humility complemented Chick. Together they loved all animals, whether it be feeding the geese in their driveway, or caring for more than 50 stray dogs they welcomed into their home. Chick and Marie both aspired to live out their final days in the privacy of their own home; this wish was granted with dignity and respect, thanks to their caretakers from Shepherd's Point Home Care: Linda, Gail, Mary, Trudy, Cathy, Stephanie, Charlotte and Janet.
Chick lived the Catholic faith which began with his education by the Dominican sisters. He was a faithful parishioner at St. Francis De Sales, helping children in need to obtain a Catholic education like he had. He graduated from Central High in 1932.
Well-known as the "Mayor of Cormany Road." Chick was proud of this title and loved Coventry Township, serving on the zoning board of appeals for 38 years. An avid golfer, Chick was a charter member of Shady Hollow Country Club and served on the Board of Directors.
Chick was a mentor and father figure to his large family of friends, most notably: Dr. Gary Zoldesy, Mel Paulino and the late Scott Shookman,
Chick celebrated his 100th birthday in 2016 surrounded by dozens of friends. Through this spring, he continued his passion for mowing with his favorite tractor. Equally impressive, Chick's mind was sharp and always active, debating local and national politics, tracking the stock market, selling household items on eBay, and writing prolific letters and emails from his iMac.
Chick will be sadly missed, but his spirit will continue to light up the world as it has for 101 years.
Funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Monday at St. Francis de Sales church 4019 Manchester Road with Rev David Bline officiating. Friends are welcome to join us at Kucko Anthony Kertesz funeral home, 1990 S Main St., 8:30 - 9:30 AM and from there, proceed to the church. Donations may be made to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Education Endowment.
