Obituary of Bernice Virginia Charney
Bernice Charney, born July 4, 1935, died at the Cleveland Clinic on October 1, 2016.
Born in Deepwater, NJ, of Powhatan Indian Descent, Bernice had lived in Philadelphia until marrying George Charney in 1954, whereupon they moved to Akron to raise their family. A breast cancer survivor, she retired from Akron Children's Hospital after 27 years of service. Feeling a desire to help the sick, she volunteered at Akron General Medical Center until her death. Bernice was an active and faithful member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Firestone Park. Bernice was a kind and generous person with her time and energy and was very devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, George; her children Mark, Michael, Patricia Butler, and Paul. She was also a grandmother of 8 and a great-grandmother of 2. She will be greatly missed by the people she touched with her kind words and generous heart, always ready with a smile and encouraging words.
The family will receive friends on Friday, 4-8 pm, at the Anthony Funeral Home KUCKO-ANTHONY-KERTESZ CHAPEL, 1990 S. Main St. in Akron. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Joe Wagner on Saturday, 10:00 am, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1580 Brown St. in Akron. A private interment will take place at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
