Obituary of Katherine Spanos
Katherine Spanos, 87, passed away July 19, 2016.
She was born in Akron on March 5, 1929 to Steve and Margaret (Koullaros) Vasiliou, who were recent immigrants from Tinos, Greece. Katherine was a lifelong resident of Akron. She attended Garfield High School and worked in her family business – Steve’s Sanitary Confectionary. Katherine married Gus Spanos in 1954. They operated a Shell Service Station at Seiberling and Martha Street for many years. Following Gus’ death in 1976, she worked for General Tire, retiring in 1996. Katherine enjoyed reading, time with family, and visiting her grandchildren out West. She was a devout member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, teaching Sunday school and participating in many other church activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, brother-in-law Donald Proctor and one grandson. She is survived by her son Jim (Valerie) Spanos and grandchildren Katie, Nick and Olivia Spanos of Buffalo, Wyoming; son Steve Spanos; sister Pauline Proctor of Akron; brother Jim (Pat) Vasiliou of Hartville; nieces Dr. Lisa Dannemiller (Jeff) and Chris Warner (Kevin); and nephew Steven Vasilious (Andrea) as well as many great-nieces and nephews and loved ones.
Calling hours are 5:00-7:00 PM on Friday, July 22 at the Anthony Funeral Homes, 1990 S. Main Street, Akron, with a Trisagion celebrated at 6:00 PM. PLEASE NOTE CHANGE: Calling hour prior to service has been CANCELED. Funeral services will begin Saturday, at 1 pm at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 129 S. Union St. in Akron.
