Obituary of William E. Lewis

William "Bill" Lewis passed away on March 23, 2016 after a courageous battle with ALS. Bill was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy and a retired Captain with the Summit County Sheriff's Office. Bill loved being outdoors; fishing, lawn work, gardening, or just sitting and puffing on his pipe, he was in his element. When winter set in, he would be found in front of the television watching reruns of old detective shows/movies. While this disease stole almost all of the things he loved doing, he was still able to get outside with friends to puff on his pipe, and watch old detective shows. The family wishes to thank Dr. Selkirk and his staff at the Cleveland Wade Park VA Hospital and the Crossroads Hospice Team B personnel who provided Bill with exceptional care during his illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Park and Helen (McGowan) Lewis. He is survived by loving family including his wife, Joan; his children, Gene (Kaye) Lewis, Kristine Applewhite, Cindi Lewis, Tami (Greg) Ward, Joe (Kristine) DiLauro, and Matt DiLauro; his brother, Larry; his grandchildren, Abagail Lewis, Alexis Applewhite, Christian DiLauro; Dustin (Nikki) Baker and Racco and Zach DiLauro; and countless extended family members. In addition to family, Bill leaves behind a very close group of friends who called themselves the Liar's Club. Calling hours will be held Monday, March 28 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St. Akron, Ohio 44301 with a short memorial service to follow at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to either the Paralyzed Veterans of America at PVA.Org or Crossroads Hospice, 3743 Boettler Oaks Dr. Suite E, Green, OH 44685.
