Obituary of Donald Sekicky
Donald Sekicky, 85, passed away Sunday morning February 7, 2016 after a long illness.
He was born in Akron on February 18, 1930, grew up in Barberton and resided in Green for the majority of his life. He was a 1948 graduate of Barberton High School and served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas and Fort Meade, Maryland. With the help of the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, known informally as the G.I. Bill, he graduated from the University of Akron with a Bachelor of Science in Education and was a Junior High Social Studies Teacher in the Bath/Richfield School District and the Akron Public Schools; he retired in 1980. He was a member of the Akron Federation of Teachers and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts and worked as a projectionist at several Akron area theaters. During his retirement, he was also a courier for National City Bank. Donald was a member of St. Archangel Michael Serbian Orthodox Church since its establishment. There he taught Sunday school, served on the executive board and was a tutor (vestryman). He was also a member of the Isidor Bajich Serbian Church Choir. He was a relentless reader of newspapers and spy novels, a fan of big band and polka music, an NPR listener and a lifelong gentleman.
Donald is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rose (Miskovic); son, David, of Berwyn, Illinois; daughter, Natalie, and granddaughter, Sofija Kathryn Sullivan, of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; and cousins Mary Ann Flores of Woodbridge, Connecticut and Robert Chirich of Sugarland, Texas.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday, February 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St. Akron, Ohio 44301 where a Parastas service will be held at 7 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 10 at 1 p.m. at St. Archangel Michael Serbian Orthodox Church at 2552 Pickle Road in Akron. Interment at Lakewood Cemetery.
