Obituary of Father Joseph C. Weigand

Father Joseph Weigand, 76, went in to the arms of Jesus, on January 14, at the Village of St. Edward in Fairlawn. Born on December 10, 1936, to the late Harry C. and Catherine B. (Klein), Fr. Weigand was educated at St. Paul, Akron, St. Gregory Seminary, Cincinnati, Borromeo Seminary College, Wickliffe and St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland. On May 19, 1962 in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Bishop John F. Whealon ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland. Father Weigand's first assignment was as Parochial Vicar at Saint Margaret Mary, Cleveland. While serving this appointment Father Weigand also served as a Religious Instructor at Borromeo High School (1962 to 1964), Cuyahoga Northeast Deanery Director, CYO, and Chaplain of the 107th Armored Calvary of Ohio National Guard. On June 17, 1970 he was appointed Parochial Vicar at Saint Joseph, Cuyahoga Falls. Father Weigand was appointed Parochial Vicar at Saint Paul, Euclid on September 26, 1974. He was transferred on December 10, 1976 to serve as Parochial Vicar at Saint Jude, Elyria. On March 19, 1981 he was appointed Parochial Vicar at Saint Patrick, Rocky River Drive, Cleveland. Father Weigand was named Pastor at St. Mary, Elyria on September 1, 1981. On September 13, 2005 he was named Senior Associate of Immaculate Heart of Mary, Cuyahoga Falls. Father Weigand retired on December 10, 2006 and named Pastor Emeritus of Saint Mary, Elyria. Father Weigand was a man of deep faith and truly loved being a priest. He loved saying Mass and was a man of prayer. Father Weigand was deeply devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In his younger years and in to adulthood, Fr. Joe was very athletic, was an avid golfer, and even played in a 40 and over softball league. He also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. In addition to his parents, Father Weigand was preceded in death by his brothers William & Gregory and nephews Brian & Daniel. he is survived by his brothers Bernard & Richard (Marsha) and his sisters Mary Ann (Jerry) LaRocca, Sister Barbara Weigand, I.H.M., and Dora Weigand. He also is survived by 4 nieces, 3 nephews, 4 great-nieces, and 1 great-nephew, as well as his uncle, George (Grace) Klein. The wake will begin on Thursday, January 17, at the Anthony Family Funeral Home, KUCKO-ANTHONY-KERTESZ CHAPEL, 1990 South Main Street, Akron from 4:00 — 7:00 pm for family and friends. Vespers will be held on Friday, January 18, at 3:00 pm in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 1905 Portage Trail, Cuyahoga Falls where the wake will continue until 8:00 pm. Vespers will be celebrated by Bishop Roger Gries. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 19 January at 10:00 am in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Bishop Richard Lennon will be the main celebrant. Interment will take place at Saint Joseph Cemetery, Randolph. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary 610 West Elm Avenue Monroe, MI 48162-7909.
