Obituary of Nick P. George

Nick P. George, 87, fell asleep in the Lord on December 17th, 2011 after a brief stay at VNS Hospice. It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to an exceptional father, grandfather, and friend. Nick was born in Akron to Paul and Helen George on December 6th, 1924. From a very young age, he strove to improve the lives of his family. He worked as head usher at the Palace Theater during the Big Band Era, where he met the stars of the time, and more importantly, where he met his wife, Helen. He would save his tips to buy candy and other goodies for his siblings, a special treat during the Great Depression. Nick also proudly served his country in WWII aboard the USS Indianapolis and USS Guam. No matter what obstacles were placed before him, Nick persevered without complaint and created a happy, loving environment that secured strong bonds within the family. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and those who knew him—even for a short time. We will remember the twinkle in his eye, the ever-present grin, and charming wit that won its way into the hearts of everyone around him. He was a blessing and a gift to have known and we will cherish every moment we had with this phenomenal man. Nick is preceded in death by his wife, Helen, and brothers George and Peter. He is survived by his three children, Cynthia (William) Dotson, Rebecca (David) Calderone, and Nicholas P. George Jr, as well as his grandchildren: Elaine (Michael) Skeggs, Sharon Dotson, William (Danielle) Dotson, and Carli (Jorge Toro) Calderone. He also leaves his sister, Mary Bess of Florida, and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to acknowledge the special bond Nick had with his physicians and associated medical personnel that worked to improve his quality of life; he held a very special place in his heart for all of them. We thank Nicholas P. George Jr, who selflessly devoted the past 12 years to the care, nurture and well-being of our beloved father. Words cannot express the gratitude for making our father's life comfortable and enjoyable. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 20, from 5-8 pm at the Anthony Funeral Home KUCKO-ANTHONY-KERTESZ CHAPEL, 1990 S. Main St. in Akron, where Fr. Jerry Hall will conduct a Trisayos at 7:00 pm. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday at 11:00 am at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on Union Street in Akron, where Nick will lie in state for one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park in Akron. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Donor Services P.O. Box 4072 Pittsfield, MA 01202.
