Obituary of Edgar Junior Ruof
Edgar Junior Ruof, returned to God Thursday, January 6, 2011 after living a life during some of the most important and historic times in the 20th Century. He was found snuggled up in his chair asleep listening to the music that he loved. He passed into God's hands peacefully on his own terms. His wife, Bernardine, passed away three months ago in September.
He was born on March 31, 1920 in Zoar, OH. He comes from one of the original families who settled Zoar. His passion was family, sports, aviation and music. He has 23 U.S. Patents to his credit in the aviation industry. His most notable work is the creation and development of Anti-Skid braking for airplanes which gave birth to the Anti-Lock brakes that are standard on cars today.
His work in aviation took a shot of steroids due to WWII. He was a NAVY veteran working at the Naval Air Station in Oklahoma City while playing semi-pro baseball after work. Our country owes him a measure of gratitude for his service.
Ed was awarded the prestigious Arnstein Award in 1984 by Goodyear for his work in aviation and technical achievements. His brakes are on legendary planes and considered the benchmark in the industry. When he retired at the age of 70, he became a founding member of a Goodyear Retirees Golf League at Mayfair Country Club. Ed was noted for his dedication and passion to the game. He loved the links and baseball almost as much as he loved his family.
He passed on the first feast day of Saint Andre' Bessette who favored St. Joseph as a model of fathers. Eddie was a model father who lived that expression of dedication to his family being a faithful husband for 66 years and raising four agreeable daughters. His home and heart was always open and he did not refuse anyone a helping hand. He lived a Christian life never, ever saying anything negative about another person.
He is survived by daughters Barbara Emery, Joan Caruso (John), Constance Bradner (Richard) and Julie Ruof; grandchildren Becky Shaver, John Durkin, Janeen Scorzelli and 5 great-grand children; sister, Lois Stalder (Lefty) and brothers Curt and Wayne Ruof.
He moved the family back to his Ohio roots in 1954 from Oklahoma to work at Goodyear Aerospace. He retired from there in 1990. He made his home Manchester, OH in a house he built with his own hands. He and his wife Bernardine moved to North Canton, OH in 2003.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 10:00 Am at Queen of Heaven Church in Uniontown, OH. Internment Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 on Monday at Anthony Funeral Home Green Chapel, 4178 Massillon Road (on the roundabout at Massillon and Steese Rds. in Green, entrance off Steese Road).
