Obituary of Helen Smyers
Helen Smyers (nee Lucansky), 96, of the City of Green passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Monday, August 23, 2010.
Born of Slovakian descent to Daniel and Mary (Stanchek) Lucansky in Massillon, Ohio on November 27, 1913.
In 1941, she married the love of her life, William A. Smyers and moved to Akron where they raised their two daughters until his death in 1971.
Mom was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in 1913 and remained an active and faithful member since. Her family and her church were the two most important things in her life. She was proud of her Slovak heritage, love to dance, do crossword puzzles and shop.
In addition to her husband and parents, Helen was preceded in death by stillborn daughter, Barbara Elaine; sisters, Susie Lucansky, Ann Looman, Mary Jacks and Sue Daniska; brothers, Jan, Albert, John and Daniel Lucansky and dear friend Steve Nabors.
She is survived by her daughters, Donna (Daniel) Testa of Green and Carol Swan of Green and Carol's fiancé Mark Hohl of Akron. She is also survived by brother Andrew (Mary Jane) Lucansky of Massillon; and many nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful Deb, Barb and Sue of Anna's Home Health Care for the excellent care and the love they've shown our mother.
Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 8 Pm. at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St.
Funeral services will be held at Saturday 10::30 Am at St. John Lutheran Church, 550 E. Wilbeth Road, Akron, Ohio 44301 with Rev John Eiwen officiating. Interment at Northlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Helen's memory to St. John Lutheran Church.
