Obituary of Thomas J. Allio
Obit of Thomas J. Allio Sr.
October 20,1922-October 21,2012
He lived and died with a heart overflowing with love and gratitude. Thomas J. Allio Sr. of
Hartville passed away at home with the peace of Christ in his heart, surrounded by his
loving wife, Carol, and his children on October 21, 2012, one day after his 90 birthday.
La Famiglia (family) and fede (faith) were hallmarks of his life. It was most fitting that his
birthday was a celebration that included more than 30 of his children, grandchildren,
great grandchildren and extended family.
Tom was born on October 20, 1922 at home in Akron, Ohio. He was the eighth of ten
children of Angelina and Giuseppe Allio. He attended Glover Elementary School and
graduated from Garfield High School in 1940.
Tomʼs first job was at his fatherʼs grocery store at the age of 14. He worked there during
high school and at Ed Paynerʼs Print Shop, where he was paid the grand sum of $10
per week.
In 1942, Tom enlisted in the Navy, serving his country during World War 11 as an
aviation metal smith, working on blimps. Upon his discharge, he enrolled at Kent State
University. Like thousands from the "Greatest Generation," he attended Kent under the
GI Bill. Tom received his B.S. degree in Economics in 3 1/2 years, while working three
days a week at BF Goodrich. He was the first member of his family to receive a college
degree.
Upon graduating from Kent, Tom sold vacuums for the Airway Vacuum Company. One
customer was the manager of the National Life Insurance Company, who offered him a
job. At National Life, Tom met the love of his life, Carol Rutan. They were married on
October 28, 1950. This month marks their 62nd wedding anniversary. As a couple, they
have been dedicated to their children and grandchildren, faithful to their church, and
supportive of friends. They traveled when possible, sang duets daily and enjoyed
numerous sunsets at the beach.
Tomʼs professional career included Firestone Tire where he did defense work and tire
production. Tom also enjoyed a 34 year career at the State of Ohio Department of
Taxation. He served the department in many capacities, including assistant manager
and as a hearing officer.
In 1988, he and his wife realized their dream of purchasing a home in Marco Shores
Estates near Naples, Florida. For the past 24 years, they have enjoyed many
friendships and events at their seasonal residence. Tom served in several leadership
capacities at Marco Shores, including President of the Homeownerʼs Association. The
bocce courts he designed are named in his honor.
Throughout his life, Tom has been a leader and volunteer with numerous organizations.
He was named "Man of the Month" by the State of Ohio; recognized for his
extraordinary work with the Knights of Columbus (Fourth Degree); served as President
of the Holy Name Society at his parish and deanery. Tom was a youth club moderator,
boy scout master, CYO baseball coach, an usher, lector, and lay minister. For years, he
gave blood to the American Red Cross often donating his blood on an emergency basis.
Tomʼs life is best exemplified by the Will Rogers quote about friendship: "A friend is a
stranger that I have not met yet." Tom saw Christ in the face of all those he
encountered. He was devoted to the rosary, loved the prayer of St. Francis and lived
each day as an "instrument of peace."
Tom is survived by his wife, Carol; sons Thomas (Kathy) Allio Jr.; William (Nancy) Allio;
Mark (Michele) Allio; and daughter Diane (Paul) Gingo. He is preceded in death by
daughter, Janet Allio. He is also survived by sister, Rose Struharik; brother and sister
in law, William and Janet Rutan. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, three great
grandchildren, and many nieces nephews.
The family wishes to extend its gratitude to the compassionate care of the staff of
Summa Hospice, as well as, Tomʼs many doctors and nurses.
Visitation will be held at the Kucko-Anthony Funeral Home, 1990 S. Main St, Akron on

Sr. will be held Friday, October 26, 2012 at 10 am at Visitation of Mary (Annunciation),
