Obituary of John A. Munka
John A. Munka, 90, passed away Monday, June 7, 2010.
He was born in Akron and was retired from Ampco Inc. He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and was a veteran of the United States Armed Forces serving during World War II. Mr. Munka served in the 27th Division 106th Infantry I Company. He served in the South Pacific Theatre of the Saipan and Mariana Islands. He was awarded both the Bronze and Silver Stars for bravery and galantry in action. He enjoyed fishing at Lake Erie and bridge. He loved his grandchildren and singing. He always had a good joke and was always ready to help someone.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Katherine and Michael; and brothers, Carl and Bill Munka. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Anna Marie; 3 children, Maryann (Ralph) Gault, Kitty (Skip) Scherer and John "Chip" Munka; 17 grandchildren, Ralph (April), Christian (Jaime), Daniel, Andrew (Robyn), Anne, Catherine, John, Michael, Nicholas, Benjamin and Maximilian Gault, Nathan (Lindsey) Putzier, Katiann and Katrina Scherer, Dustin Grams and Rachel and Alex Munka; 6 great-grandchildren; brothers, Fred (Doris) and Joe (Pat) Munka; sisters, Katherine Bryson and Maryjane (Dan) McCorkle; sister-in-law, Agnes Munka; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, 9:30 a.m. at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St. in Akron and at 10 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery where American Legion Post 449 will also conduct military honors. The family will receive friends Friday, 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
