Obituary of Gary P. Slick

Gary P. Slick, 60, passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2008 after an extended battle with cancer. Gary was born in Akron in 1948 to Ralph and Pauline Slick. He graduated from Archbishop Hoban High School in 1966 and the University of Akron in 1970. After four years in the business world, Gary determined his true vocation was to become a teacher. He taught students with disabilities for almost 34 years, retiring from Springfield Local Schools in June 2005. During the course of his career he received numerous teaching honors including the Distinguished Alumni Award from The University of Akron and Archbishop Hoban Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumni Award. Gary enjoyed woodworking, photography, landscaping, coin collecting and rescuing dogs and cats. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Pauline, his infant brother, Paul, his grandparents, Ira and Almeda Slick, Raymond and Helen Miller, aunts/uncles Corrine (Wells) Butterworth, Dorothy (Elton) Yerkey, Glen (Pauline) Slick and cousin Joanne Weigle. He is survived by his wife, Diane; stepdaughter Megan (Dan) Davis, cousins Mark, David and Jack Slick, Bill Butterworth and Barbara Bratton. He is also survived by good friends Larry Petrasek, Michael Ross, Cory Sutton and Jennifer Frey. He leaves his rescued animals, Max, Heidi, Holly and Lexus. The family wishes to thank Dr. Jeffrey Kile, Dr. R. Douglas Trochelman and their staffs for their kind, attentive care given during Gary's illness. Cremation has already taken place. The family will receive condolences from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, December 28, 2008 at Anthony & Biscan Funeral Home, 4178 Massillon Rd., City of Green. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Father David Bline at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church at 4019 Manchester Road in Akron on Monday, December 29, 2008 at 10:00 AM. Private interment at Holy Cross Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family.
