I succeed Dave at the University of Akron in 1989 as the Department of History's new German historian. His legendary status as a teacher was, and continues to be, a hard act to follow. Dave was exceptionally warm and friendly to me when I first came to campus for my interview, and many of the books that sit in my office library came from him. There is also the 1960s map of Germany that I've used to excellent effect in my classes, which he gave to me upon his retirement. Rest in peace, Dave. You've had a long, happy, and productive life and you will be sorely missed. My condolences to Sally and Dave's family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I was blessed to have Dr. Riede as a professor at the University of Akron. He was an outstanding teacher, constantly challenging us to learn. By far, he was the best teacher I ever had. May God bless Dr. Riede with eternal life in His loving care and may our Lord comfort and strengthen his family during this time of grief.
