Obituary of Roland 'Jim' Carroll
Loving brother and uncle, Roland "Jim" Carroll, 89, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 13th 2012, in Akron, Ohio, surrounded by family.
Known as "Jim" or "Junior", he was born June 9th 1923, in Young Cane Georgia to Roland and Ada (Anderson) Carroll. Roland was a veteran of the United States Army, Air Core Division, during World War II, receiving the following recognitions, the Victory Medal, European-African Eastern Theater Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal. He retired from Firestone Tire and Rubber Co., as a quality engineer in 1985 with over 42 years of service.
He lived his life with integrity, and a sincere loyalty to family and friends. The love he had for his family was reflected in the way he lived his life. His belief in hard work was formed at an early age. Raised on a farm in Georgia, he worked long hours at a very young age. His first job was working at a roadside restaurant/gas station at the age of 12, which eventually led him to Akron, Ohio. At age 14, he worked at Babcock and Wilcox in Barberton, later volunteering to serve his country in World War II. At the end of the war, he returned home to work at Firestone, and spend the remainder of his life Akron, Ohio. He enjoyed the horse races at Northfield Park, and often traveled to visit family as far away as Germany. He was an avid euchre player, teaching four generations of family the game, he managed however, to keep the secret of stacking the deck to himself! He always put the welfare of others before his own, and loved going to the casinos with his sister Shirley, Sunday afternoon dinners, coffee with his dear friend Sue every morning, and talking politics. He will be forever missed by his family and friends.
Preceded in death by parents, Roland and Ada Carroll, brothers, Henry Clay, Candler, Trammell and sisters, Margurite and Geneva. He is survived by his sister, Shirley (Carroll) Stalnaker, nieces, Jacqueline (Alexander) Hellge, Dixie (Tony) Basile, Geraldine Mason, Guinnell Hunter, Joanne (Ron) Wright, nephews, Wayne (Judy) Baer, Wade (Becky) Baer, Eugene (Betty) Grizzel, Bob (Miriam) Carroll, Ron (Carol), Carroll, Danny Carroll, and numerous great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
