Obituary of Sigrid A. Hansen

Surrounded by loving family members in her Uniontown home, Sigrid A. Hansen left to be with The Lord on Oct. 19, 2007. Born on April 10, 1920, in Baltimore, Md., Sigrid developed a strong pride in her Norwegian roots. In 1952 she earned a BS in Occupational Therapy (OT) from New York University and in 1965 her MA in Special Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. After serving as an Occupational Therapist, Sigrid began her teaching career in 1965 as an Assistant Professor of OT at Western Michigan University. In 1967 she was recruited by the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, to establish an OT program. In her honor, the Sigrid A. Hansen award is annually given to a Downstate senior student. Always dedicated to helping those in need, at age 80 Sigrid volunteered for a year at Covenant House in Houston, Tex. She was an active member of the McDonaldsville United Methodist Church for the last 26 years. Sigrid leaves behind her sisters, Bertha Pedersen and Hanna Russell (Riley), and brother Knud Hansen (Gladys); 33 nieces and nephews; 91 great niece's and nephews; and 69 great grand nieces and nephews who will greatly miss her.
