Obituary of Albert Oliver Morris

Albert Oliver Morris, Jr., 92 passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2017.

He was born in Akron and was a lifetime member of MOTTS War Museum, Firestone VFW Post 3383 and the Teamsters Union. Albert served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the heavy cruiser, USS Indianapolis. The USS Indianapolis earned eight battle stars. Albert survived the sinking of the USS Indianapolis after it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the closing days of the war. He was one of only 317 sailors who survived the sinking and spent four and a half days adrift on the sea before rescue. Albert was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds inflicted during the sinking and ordeal in the sea.

Albert was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel. He is survived by sons, Albert J. (Annie), Jim (Ann) and William Morris; grandchildren, Jim (Tiffany), Brian (Courtney) and Brittany Morris; and great-granddaughter, Aly Morris.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, 11 a.m. at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St. Akron, Ohio 44301. The family will receive friends Friday, 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Further interment will take place at a later date at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.
