Mary Barb

Obituary of Mary Barb

Mary Barb of Tallmadge went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 12, 2017, after a brief illness. Mary died peacefully, surrounded by her family. She was born in Akron and graduated from Ellet High School as valedictorian of her class, later instilling her love of learning in her children. Mary worked in the insurance field for Metropolitan Life after high school. She met and married Gene Barb, after which Mary became a stay-at-home mom. Later, she returned to work, this time with Professional Anesthesiologists of Akron, but retired early to care for her parents. Mary took pride in raising her two daughters, and managing the household and finances. She also took good care of the birds and squirrels that visited her home, as well as a stray cat that became a member of the family for nineteen years. Mary was a devoted Eastern Orthodox Christian and was a member of The Presentation of Our Lord Church, which she faithfully attended. Over the years, she sang in the choir, served as a Sunday School teacher, and was a member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary. Countless weekends were spent volunteering at the church fish fry and catered events. Mary also spent much of her time caring for her grandson so that her daughter could continue her teaching career. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Victoria Pultea. She is survived by her husband Gene, daughters Vicki (Bob) Dietrich and Cindy (Andy) Shkolnik, grandson Robert Dietrich, sister Helen Balaj, and many nieces, nephews, godchildren, and friends. The family would like to thank the nurses, aides, and doctors of Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service for their wonderful care and support. Friends may call at The Presentation of Our Lord Church, 3365 Ridgewood Rd, Fairlawn, on Thursday, March 16, from 4 to 8 p.m., with Saracusta service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral will be on Friday, March 17, at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Fairlawn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Presentation of Our Lord Church.
