Obituary of George Garnick

George Garnick Sr., 83, went home to be with the Lord on February 14, 2010. Born on April 30, 1926 in West Pike Run Twp., PA to the late Andrew and Mary Garnick, George had been an Akron resident his entire life. In 1949 he married Beatrice Keegan, a union which lasted 58 years and produced six children. George was employed by the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. for 45 years, retiring in 1989. He proudly served his country during WWII as a member of the US Navy. He was a faithful lifetime member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, where he was an altar server until the age of 82, was also a member of the Holy Name Society, and served on the Parish Council. George was a good man and a hard worker who gave willingly of himself to serve his church and to lovingly care for his wife during a 17 year battle with Alzheimer's Disease. In addition to his parents and 10 siblings, George was preceded in death by his wife Beatrice in 2007; Daughter Linda and son George Jr. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters Sandy (Aaron) Galpert, Debbie (Butch) Behra, and Leslie Garnick; son Mark Garnick; sister Margaret Goda; sister-in-law Florence Garnick; grandchildren Lesa (Ron) Lux, Valerie Goyne, Jeff (Crista) Dean, and Sam, Matt and Ben Galpert; great-grandchildren Jim and Jessi Harrison, and Parker and Cooper Dean. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 pm at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St. in Akron. A funeral services will take place Thursday at 10:00 am at St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, where George will lie in state for one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at St. Michael Cemetery, where Mogadore VFW Post 8487 will conduct military honors.
