Obituary of Dorothy Theresa Marz
Dorothy Marz, age 87, passed away peacefully October 4th 2009. She was in the loving comfort of her home of the past eight years, The Briarwood. She joins the love of her life, husband George who passed in 1993, along with other dear family and friends who have gone before her.
She leaves two sons to celebrate her life; Martin John and daughter-in-law Marie of Kingwood, Texas and Michael Josef of Akron. Other survivors include brother Jack McDermott of Tulsa, Oklahoma and grand-daughters Ashley and Allison Marz of Kingwood, Texas.
Born in Brooklyn, New York April 11, 1922, she moved with her family to Akron at the age of five. A life-long resident of Firestone Park and member of St. Paul Parish she graduated from Garfield High School and Siena Heights College with a degree in education. Early in her career, in addition to teaching, she worked for the Fisher brothers in Detroit and as an executive secretary at Firestone in Akron.
She met George not long after he moved to Akron. They married in February of 1952 and eventually settled in Firestone Park. After raising their two sons she returned to the workplace as a cashier at the University of Akron bookstore. She enjoyed the regular interaction with college students which kept her young and her fellow employees who came to be dear friends.
Dorothy was active in numerous organizations including the PTA, Hoban Mother's Club and Associates of St. Joseph. She was also active for years with the Firestone Park Y Mother's Club., the Women's Auxiliary of Juvenile Court, the Akron Civic Theater Women's Guild and the Friend's of Akron Children's Hospital through all of which she made many lasting friendships.
She will be remembered for her keen wit, sharp sense of style and the Irish twinkle in her eye when she smiled. She had a kind and generous heart as those who knew her will attest.
She will be missed by the dedicated staff and many dear friends from her time at The Briarwood. The family thanks them for the love and care offered during her time with them.
The family will receive friends Tuesday 4-7 p.m. at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St. Funeral services will be held Wednesday 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery.
