Obituary of Frank Gazafy

CASTRO VALLEY, CA Frank Gazafy, 88, passed away Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009 in Castro Valley, Ca. He retired from the Coast Guard serving 26 years as Master Chief Quartermaster specializing in navigation. Prior to that he served 8 years in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed on many ships, the most distinguished being the U.S.S. Density Fleet Minesweeper during World War II, making a major impact to our Navy's proud history destroying 53 Japanese mines. He enjoyed attending the U.S.S. Density reunions since 1965 until his death. He also served in the Korean War. He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and the US Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association. He enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, and woodworking. His sense of humor, many stories and love for family will be deeply missed. Frank was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Katherine Gazafi and son, Steve Gazafy. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Anna (Varga); son Frank Gazafy of Tallmadge; daughter Deborah Gazafy-Couch (John Couch) of Castro Valley. Five grandchildren; Derek, Jordan and Alison of Tallmadge, Johnny and Kristin of Castro Valley, Ca. He is survived by sisters in Akron: Eva Gentile, Sabina Shoyat, Dorothy Magyar, Katherine Catania, and Marion Simone in Fresno, Ca. The family will receive friends Friday from 5-8 pm at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11:00 am at the funeral home.
