Obituary of Barbara P. Hlivko

Barbara P. Hlivko "Aunt Bunnie" Barbara Hlivko passed away April 27, 2009 after a short illness. Barbara was born in Akron, Ohio and had been an Akron resident her entire life. She was employed at Goodyear Aerospace/Aircraft Braking Systems and retired with 37 years of service. She was a world traveler who visited Europe, Asia and explored her heritage in Czechoslovakia. Her passion and joy was the athletics program at The University of Akron, especially their soccer and basketball programs, and she followed her teams around the world, from Spain to Alaska and Hawaii. She received the Kenneth "Red" Cochrane Meritorious Service Award in February of 2009 from the university for her outstanding dedication. Long standing member if the University of Akron Varsity "A" Club and donated her time and talents to many of the University's events. The family wishes to thank Aunt Bunnie's lifelong friend Carmen for the wonderful care she provided during her final days. Bunnie was an active volunteer at St. Michael's Byzantine Church in Akron. She devoted many hours to Bingo nights and was also President of the Greek Catholic Union. She is preceded in death by brothers, George, Michael, John and sister, Ann Monsour. Bunnie is survived by her sister-in-law Evelyn Hlivko, numerous nieces, nephews and many friends who will miss her greatly. The family will receive friends Thursday 3-7 p.m. at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St., where Parastas service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, 847 Crouse St.. Cremation to follow service with burial of ashes at St. Michael Cemetery at a later date. Donations may be made to the University of Akron Athletics Department.
