Obituary of Edward Ray Long

Edward R. Long, Sr., 82, passed on to the next phase of life on April 17, 2009. Ed was born April 4, 1927 in Akron, Ohio and remained a lifelong resident of the area. As a young man he served his country and the Navy in World War II. Upon his return, he enjoyed his position and his friends at Goodyear Aerospace/Loral until his retirement in 1989. Also a Mason, he was a member of Mt. Akra Lodge 680 F & AM. Possessing an uncanny and unexpected sense of humor, Ed could add a slant to everyday events. He enjoyed fishing, wheel of fortune, liked his dogs, loved his chair and will forever remain the Spirit of Freddie Johnson. Loyal to friends and family, he defended and supported his children and grandchildren when others could not. He cherished his wife Leora even more than daily life enabled him to show. "When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight." He will be greatly missed. Edward was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma; and he leaves his wife of 35 years, Leora; children, Edward Long, Jr., Beth (Bruce) Manwaring and Judy (Brian) Faris; grandchildren, Jennifer (Ben) Urbon, Robert Jonathon Spikermann, Caitlyn Manwaring and Lindsay Manwaring; a great-grandchild on the way; brother, James (Jan) Long; niece, Tammy (Ed) Meador; nephews, Jim (Tracy) Long and Joe Long; as well as many other dear friends and relatives. Funeral service will be held Monday, 11 a.m. at the Anthony Funeral Home McGowan-Reid & Santos Chapel, 247 Stow Ave. (one block North of Portage Trail at 3rd St.) in Cuyahoga Falls. Pastor Erv Urschitz officiating. Interment at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, 4 to 8 p.m. and Monday, one hour prior to service at the funeral home. For those who desire, donations can be made to the Humane Society of Greater Akron, 4904 Quick Rd. Peninsula, OH 44264.
