Obituary of Mary Lou Keeling
Mary Lou (Mitseff) Keeling, 73, passed away Sunday, January 18, 2009 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Mary Lou was born on July 20, 1935 in Akron, and lived her whole life in the Akron area. She married the love of her life, Beeb (Harold) Keeling, December 11, 1955. She and Beeb owned and operated the family business, Bories Bowland in Akron, which her father started in 1944. She also worked for the Connie Shops and bowled professionally.
Mary Lou's bowling career began at the age of 9, by 18 she was bowling in the All-Star Classic and was Bowler of the Year in 1959-60. She only missed making the Beacon Journal teams twice in 13 years. Along with her friend, Rosemary Kelly, she won the Ohio State Doubles titles in 1961 and 1974, breaking the record in '74 with a 1370 series with Mary Lou having a 705 series. Mary Lou had six 700 series, her highest 763 in 1974, this was the highest 3 game series ever rolled by a woman in Akron. In 1972, the WIBC ranked Mary Lou as one of the top scorers in the United States over a five year span. She was a member of the Professional Women's Bowling Association for 15 years, including a national tour. She was inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame in 1974 and the Tri-County Hall of Fame in 1980 for her bowling achievements.
Along with her bowling accomplishments she was also a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, godmother, aunt, niece and cousin to her family. We will all miss her making zelnik and many other Macedonian goodies for our family.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Payne and the staff of Summit Oncology; Summa Homecare and Hospice, with special thanks to Heather and Stephanie; everyone in the Palliative Care Unit at Akron City Hospital; and a very special thanks to our family and friends that helped care for and brought food to her at home.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, Boris and Alpha Mitseff; brother, Dan Mitseff; brother-in-law, Kenneth Keeling.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, of 53 years, Beeb Keeling; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Brett Scott; granddaughters, Brittany and Michelle Scott, all of Canal Fulton; goddaughters, Alison Byers, Heather Lucas; sisters-in-law, Barbara (Ray) Witzberger, JoAnn Mitseff; brother-in-law, Wayne (Sheri) Keeling; nephews, Rick (Terri) Witzberger, Steve Witzberger; nieces, Marlyn Parsell, Micki (Steve) Mitchen; and many many wonderful nephews, nieces, cousins and aunt Lucy.
uneral services will be held Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 11:00 am, at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St. with Father Ian G. Pac-Urar officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm and on Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
